The hull is mahogany on oak beams and the deck is the original iroko (with a few leaks, but it IS a wooden boat). Fairlie Boatbuilders have done a lot of work on the hull over the years of my ownership. The most substantial work was replacing the transom a few years ago. The hull has been recently painted to a very high standard.
The rudder has been re-designed back to its original shape. All metal fittings were removed and cleaned c. 8 years ago.

Commentaires du Broker

This yacht is a charming and increasingly rare example of the Honey Bee 27, a classic long-keel cruising yacht designed by A.K. Balfour and built in Rostock. With her elegant traditional lines, proven sea-keeping qualities and extensive ownership history, she represents an opportunity to acquire a genuine cruising classic that has been cared for by knowledgeable owners throughout her life.
The current owner purchased her in 2008 and has enjoyed nearly two decades of sailing and maintaining her on the Clyde. During this period she has been cruised extensively, including three voyages to the Outer Hebrides, where she proved herself a capable and dependable boat in the demanding conditions of Scotland's West Coast. Her owner reports that she performs exceptionally well in heavier weather, which is very much in keeping with the reputation of these solid long-keel yachts. Previous owners also undertook Channel crossings and cruises to the Channel Islands, demonstrating the confidence that this design has inspired over the years.
Particularly impressive is the level of documentation and maintenance history that accompanies the boat. The owner holds invoices stretching back beyond his own period of ownership, providing an unusually comprehensive record of ongoing care and investment. Since arriving on the Clyde, She has spent many winters in indoor storage and has benefited from regular professional attention.
The mahogany-on-oak hull has been maintained over many years by the respected team at Fairlie Boatbuilders. Significant works have included replacement of the transom, together with ongoing structural maintenance as required. The hull has been recently painted to a very high standard and presents extremely well. The original iroko deck remains in place and, while there are a few leaks, this is not unusual for a traditional wooden yacht of this age and should be viewed in the context of owning a classic timber vessel.
Power is provided by a Volvo Penta MD11D 25hp diesel engine with an exceptional maintenance history. The engine was rebuilt by Volvo Marine, with further overhauls and upgrades carried out throughout its life, including a full top-end overhaul in 2008. Annual servicing has been undertaken by an experienced former Volvo Penta engineer, and most recently the engine received a professional service in 2026, including filter changes, adjustments, new cold-start cable installation and electrical improvements. The owner comments that the engine has never let him down during his ownership.
The sailing inventory is another notable feature. The boat benefits from a recent Hyde mainsail, a Hyde furling headsail, genoa, storm jib, cruising chute with snuffer and a spinnaker complete with pole and gear. The sails are reported to be in excellent condition and are stored below when not in use. Standing rigging was renewed in 2023, offering peace of mind for future cruising plans.
On deck, she is equipped for comfortable cruising with sprayhood, spray dodgers, boom tent, full-length cotton deck cover, swim ladder, anchors, extensive mooring warps and fendering, together with numerous practical extras accumulated during years of active cruising. The Selden boom was replaced approximately ten years ago and the mast is aluminium and deck-stepped.
Below decks, accommodation is simple, practical and full of traditional character. With four berths, good headroom, a two-burner gas cooker with grill, manual water system, sizeable freshwater tank and a selection of galley equipment included, she offers comfortable accommodation for weekends away and extended coastal cruising alike.
What stands out most about her is that she has not been a neglected project or static exhibit. She has been actively cruised, carefully maintained and regularly upgraded by owners who clearly appreciated her qualities. For anyone seeking a capable wooden cruising yacht with proven West Coast credentials, documented maintenance history and timeless classic appeal, this Honey Bee 27 deserves serious consideration. Boats with this level of provenance and long-term care rarely become available, and viewing is highly recommended to appreciate everything she has to offer.
